E-education ?A Platform of learning for present scenario
Introduction
Information is the lifeline of the digital age and 21st century is shaping itself in the Knowledge Economy at a breath-taking pace. People now have the power to learn on their own time and at their pace. e-Learning technologies allow for the real-time performance, thus enabling individuals to spend time on their deficiencies rather than spending time on areas that they have mastered already.
1.The advancement of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has allowed teachers and lecturers worldwide to test the power and capability of the technology to meet the demand of the new generation in teaching and learning approach. The development of the user-friendly computer networks, internet, multimedia, on-line instruction, satellite and other high-end ICT peripherals have enhanced the usage of this technology in education. Education in the future will exist in different format and technology will transform and dictate the format.
2. The technology in higher education gives greater impact on the teaching and learning process. It demands for a change in the mindset of the students, lecturers and administrators of the university. E-learning could customize the academic programs based on the demands and the geographical constraint of the students.
Objective
The ultimate development objective is to bridge the digital divide, in terms of knowledge and opportunities, among communities in Malaysia through the provision of tools and training required to effectively utilize educational and development-related information to participate in the K-economy for social and economic betterment.
E-learning objectives include the following:
• To reduce the need for classroom training
• To track employee progress
• To track training effectiveness (or absorption)
• To link training with Knowledge Management
• To reduce time away from the job
• To improve job performance
• To support business objectives
• To make learning available anytime, anywhere
Aspects
When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or “infotech”. Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.
The paper reviews and extends different aspects of Information Technology in education.
The different aspects of information technology can be divided into four as follows:
1. Learning about information technology
Learning about information technology, which is basically programming; software and its applications as well as machinery structure.
2. Learning with the aid of information technology
Learning with the aid of information technology which refers to a further aid to the learning process, using Internet, a CD-ROM encyclopedia, a graphics calculator, or sensors for collecting data; in all such cases the computer is used as s support or a resource, but does not provide the teaching modality.
3. Learning by means of information technology includes both Computer Aided Learning (CAL) and Computer Managed Learning(CML)
Learning by means of information technology includes both Computer Aided Learning (CAL) such as science and geography simulations and computer based modeling; and Computer Managed Learning (CML) referring to computer based programme management of a pupil’s learning progress through a particular course.
4. Information Technology as an aid to school management.
Information technology as an aid to school management, refers to the use of IT for carrying out tasks related to the school management and to store information related to the students learning progress.
Latest Technologies in e-Learning Education:
New computing devices, faster networks, and enhanced digital imaging techniques are expected to drive your future. Many of these new technologies are closer than you might realize. New technologies are expected to revolutionize the way people learn. Listed below are some new technologies in the
field of education.
1. Portable Computing Devices
Handheld devices and laptops are likely to be the mainstay of computer use in education. According to a latest report from market research company IDC, public school districts in the United States are expected to spend $9.5 billion on information technology by the 2005–2006 academic year.
It seems certain that ultimately all students will have some type of personal computing device. Institutions in all probability will accelerate this revolution by providing electronic versions of textbooks on their Web sites. With a couple of taps on their screens, students will use fast wireless networks to download content to their portable computing devices.
2. Wireless Technology
At the regional and local levels, the use of wireless technology is exploding. A recent wireless technology development is the emergence of equipment for the 802.11a wireless standard. This new standard for data transmission allows wireless networks to perform better, stronger, and faster and up to five times as fast as 802.11b-based systems. With the help of this increase in throughput, wireless LANs will become an acceptable conduit for applications such as video and streaming media. For heavy data transportation, high-performance computer networks will continue to expand. These networks are expected to be the future of educational networking and will bring fast connections to regional hubs and nodes.
3. Tele-Immersion and Three-Dimensional Imaging
While most users watch jerky video and listen to stuttering audio, Internet2 users have the benefit of true tele-immersion: the ability to be immersed in a realistic environment with crystal-clear video and digital stereo sound. Tele-immersion allows users at diverse geographical locations to collaborate in real time in a shared, simulated, hybrid environment as if they were in the same physical space. These new tele-immersion atmospheres are created with display types, which are like entire rooms that immerse the viewer in three-dimensional virtual environments.
4. Multimedia Projectors
Multimedia projectors are getting smaller, lighter, and much brighter. Most manufacturers have launched new projectors into the categories of “ultraportable” (units between 6 and 12 pounds), “microportable” (units that are under 6 pounds), and “mini-projectors” (units that weigh less than 4 pounds). The future will certainly offer units that are brighter and lighter. By the beginning of 2004, we might see units breaking the 2-pound barrier, and average lumen ratings will be around 2000.
5. Flatter Display
Most of the new computers being purchased for learning are generally equipped with LCD displays. Of late, LCD displays have finally cracked the 30-inch barrier and are moving toward 40 inches and above. Most of the Japanese and Korean manufacturers are ramping up production of flat-screen plasma displays in sizes ranging from 32 to 61 inches.
By the end of the year 2010, it’s quite likely that learners will carry around a very thin computing device that can access data quickly and efficiently from multiple sources. Just try to imagine the possibilities: video, voice, and data on demand; interactive communication with peers and teachers; and no more heavy books to carry around.
Development:
A number of factors should be kept in mind when designing a meaningful learning environment; many of them fall into six dimensions:
1. Pedagogical Dimension.
The pedagogical dimension addresses issues concerning content analysis, audience analysis, goal analysis, medium analysis, design approach, organization, and instructional methods and strategies. Various eLearning methods and strategies include: presentation, demonstration, drill and practice, tutorials, games, story telling, simulations, role-playing, discussion, interaction, modeling, facilitation, collaboration, debate, field trips, apprenticeships, case studies, generative development, and motivation.
2. Technological Dimension.
The technological dimension examines the issues related to technology infrastructure in eLearning environments. This includes infrastructure planning (e.g., technology plan, standards, metadata, learning objects, etc.) and hardware and software needs (e.g., LMS, LCMS, etc.).
3. Interface Design Dimension.
This refers to the overall look and feel of eLearning programs. The interface design dimension encompasses page and site design, content design, navigation, usability testing, and accessibility.
4. Evaluation Dimension.
This includes both assessment of learners and evaluation of the instruction and learning environment.
5. Management Dimension.
This refers to the maintenance of the learning environment and distribution of information.
6. Resource Support Dimension.
This examines the online support (e.g., instructional/counseling support, technical support, career counseling services, other online support services) and resources (i.e., both online and offline) required to foster meaningful learning environments.
The purpose of these six dimensions is to help designers think through every aspect of what they are doing during various steps of the eLearning design process. As the scope of eLearning design expands, design projects change from one-person operations to complex team efforts. The eLearning structure should ensure that none of these important factors are omitted from the design of eLearning, whatever its scope or complexity.
One may find that designing open, flexible, and distributed eLearning systems for globally diverse learners is challenging; however, as more and more institutions offer eLearning to learners worldwide, designers will become more knowledgeable about what works and what does not. Organizations should try their best to accommodate the needs of diverse learners by asking as many critical questions as possible during the planning period of eLearning design. The number and types of questions may vary based on each unique eLearning system. By exploring more and more critical eLearning issues, one can create meaningful and supportive learning environments for learners.
4C’s of e-Learning Success
While the dawn of Internet technology made it a viable educational alternative, electronic learning can never truly prosper without paying careful attention to the following “4 C’s”:
• A Culture of learning;
• Champions who will lead e-Learning efforts;
• Communications that position eLearning’s value; and
• Attractive Compensation scheme for people to accept the eLearning culture
These 4C’s are broadly described as follows:
Culture – building winning strategies that work
Focus at the enterprise level.
New cultures can be successfully adapted when a sufficient critical mass of people wanting that particular change to happen exists. Trying to work those cultural issues group by group can only prove frustrating and failure-prone. In the event that the training and development community within the organization is fragmented, try to bring unity to the function. Otherwise, not enough clout will exist to change much of anything. A learning management system like Excelearn can assist in this endeavor.
Incorporate learning directly into the work environment.
As far as possible, make eLearning a part of everyone’s daily work activities. A simple way to begin doing this is to take time out of the daily schedule to share new insights or problems.
Resources should be easily accessible.
This means placing main eLearning access points on the intranet pages people visit most often. While this may create some initial fears about cost and security, the advantages that result often more than compensate for the risk.
Champions – helping senior managers & early users
Teach executives.
Give your employees some short, business-oriented eLearning publications that address their chief concerns. Try to offer them benchmarking data that indicates the effectiveness of eLearning. Suggest to your employees a business conference where they can talk to their peers and experts about eLearning.
Pay no attention to the disbelievers.
Never waste your time trying to sell eLearning to those who are resistant to it. Their inability to adapt to eLearning methodologies could be based on good intentions, genuine strategic disagreements, or personal issues such as fear of losing power. Many people come around when they witness that some benefits are resulting from the eLearning process. A custom eLearning development program can illuminate these results more quickly and vividly.
Communication – conveying eLearning needs effectively
Communicate value from the top order.
Always make sure your sponsors are involved in the communication process. If you’ve built management ownership into your agreement, getting them to spread your message to others should be easy. Communication from the top also lends trustworthiness to your efforts to institute an eLearning culture.
Build support with coaches first.
Design a separate communication strategy for front-line managers, as their support is vital if workplace learning is to be successful. Commence your work with them early, before the deployment of your eLearning initiatives, since it will definitely take some time to win them over.
Build and promote an initial win.
Position your communications around best practices and solid examples of what eLearning can accomplish. Highlight what you have already achieved, even if it’s a small win, Tout your eLearning successes with endorsements and testimonials of the resulting benefits and impact on senior managers and learners, if possible.
Compensation – appraisal on eLearning progress
What will I achieve from this?
This is likely to be the first question most of the employees in any organization will ask themselves. Top management has to deal with the incentives issue if they hope to encourage their employees to adopt the new culture readily. If management can effectively relate the eLearning effort to the performance appraisal, workers will see this as directly affecting their own bottom lines: in the form of bonuses, raises and promotional prospects within the organization.
Make everyone aware of the consequences.
The managing committee should clearly spell out the positive consequences of adopting such cultural changes to their employees. Alternatively, the negative consequences should be implied to those who are unwilling to adopt the new culture. Whichever of these two consequential approaches is employed, management must take up fair measurement criteria to track the progress of their employees’ job performance.
Conclusion:
This paper was written to add voice to the growing awareness of the tidal wave of opinion on technological learning tools. Furthermore, e-Learning is gaining the attention of industry and the education sectors alike. In the meantime, the following questions are worth asking:
How long should the scoping process for e-Learning last?
How long before there is a common realization that the term e-Learning is nothing more than another piece of techno-jargon?
How long before there is a realization that the Web-based learning context involves as many components outside the current techno-idiosyncratic framework, as within information technology – that knows no bounds, and truly extends the learning journey through time and space?
Top Favored Liberal Arts Distance Learning Programs
The term liberal arts denotes a curriculum that teaches, improves general knowledge and helps in improving a student’s rational thought and intellectual capabilities, unlike the vocational or technical curricula that constantly emphasize on the specialization. The study in the liberal arts helps in reinforcing students’ abilities in critical analysis, figurative thinking and clear communication.
The liberal arts program is among the major distance learning online liberal arts degrees available in the United States. In fact, this liberal arts program has proved to be a decent transfer course as far as the students are concerned. These courses help the students receive some really good education as far as communications and culture are concerned. It even helps the students study information and conduct research in a sophisticated manner. The best benefit of this program is that being a graduate in liberal arts an individual can find a variety of careers, particularly in media, law, business and social work. Unlike very specialized pre-professional programs, liberal art programs are not focused on a specific vocation; rather it prepares students to think decisively, write convincingly and read between the lines.
It can be considered as one of the few subjects in the United States that prepares every student to perform meaningful, original work and move or upgrade their creative discipline forward. In recent times, this subject has garbed the attention of many students and as a result these days many online universities and colleges are providing different distance learning programs in liberal arts. So, if you are one of those who are looking to advance your career with a degree in liberal arts, here are some of the top programs you can consider and select:
Environmental Science Distance Learning Program- This distance learning program primarily focuses on the examination of the social aspects of environmental policies and regulations. In addition to this, the program focuses on other aspects like the natural biological, chemical and physical processes affecting the planet. Being a distance learning environmental science program, in most of the cases, it does not include laboratory or field work classes, and so students are required to complete internships to gain real-world environmental science experience. Nevertheless, graduates with online environmental science degree programs are qualified to earn positions and work in the government regulatory agencies, environmental and non-profit conservation organizations and environmental consulting firms.
Liberal Studies Distance Learning Program If you are one of those who have great inclination in culturally oriented subjects offered at universities or want to take liberal arts and humanities classes then this course could be ideal option. This course can help you provide the general cultural knowledge, like literature, languages, philosophy and history. Once you complete the program you can find jobs in the field of law or medicine that generally require general liberal arts and humanities undergraduate courses before admission into advance learning classes for those fields.
Political Science Distance Learning Program- This program introduces the history and the key techniques of political science, and primarily emphasize on key ideologies, different viewpoint and quantitative methods used in the discipline. It compares various governments and politics to illustrate political theory. The program also provides an overview of the evolution of political science and discusses recent developments in the United States political scene. As a graduates with a degree in political science, you can go on to law or graduate school or may even work in education, politics, journalism or for the government, research firms, non-profit organizations or interest groups.
The list is almost never-ending as with various distance learning programs you can go into with a liberal arts degree. In last few years the liberal art courses has gained enormous popularity and in next few years it is even expected to be one of the most favored distance learning courses. Undoubtedly, today an accredited distance learning liberal art degree holds much respect and offer diversity and flexibility in career that can is very rare to be found in any other degree.
Adult Education – Creating Overwhelmingly Successful Learning Programs for the (supposed) Adults in Your Organization
Every organization understands the value of ongoing education and training. We all want to have a staff of professionals who continue to grow and improve themselves in their specialty, to learn the ropes of their industry, and to learn about your company and your customers.
Active adult learners make the best employees. But many managers and trainers fail to recognize the fact that adults learn very differently than children and younger adults who are in the formal school system.
The Solution
This article is a comparison and discussion of the concepts of andragogy, meaning “the art and science of helping adults to learn”. . . contrasted with pedagogy, the art and science of helping children to learn. There is some discussion about whether androgogy is a theory of learning, a theory of teaching, or a set of assumptions. Despite the controversy, androgogy is a workable concept and an excellent “conversation-piece” to describe many of the issues with adult education and ways it can and should be different from the education of children. What follows are five of the key factors that define androgogy and differentiate it from pedagogy, together with illustrations or examples of how they might be used by an instructor.
The need to know
In a classroom of children, there are some concrete guidelines established by a school board with cultural and demographic information that establish what children should be expected to know by the fifth grade, for example. Adults, on the other hand, may be influenced by the boss or co-workers, or friends and family, or may even be compelled to enroll in some educational programs. For the most part, however, adults determine what they want and need to know for themselves. The largest majority of adults elect to enroll in classes, seek private instruction, or engage in independent learning projects.
It is very important to ensure the course is positioned and marketed appropriately. Perspective learners that select a particular course need to be assured that the course objectives and materials. That would help ensure the adults that enroll have a stronger desire to learn. The instructor should also conduct a short needs analysis (depending on the length and complexity of the course) in the first session to find out WHY each person enrolled and what they expected to learn.
The learners’ self-concept
The self-esteem of children is fragile yet fairly malleable. Most children can be persuaded to take part in various activities using fairly simple methods. Adults, however, sometimes have self-concept issues that interfere with learning. Overcoming a self-developed label, such as “I’m not technical” or “I’ve been out of school too long” can interfere with an adult’s participation or success in a learning endeavor. It is important for the instructor to ferret out these concepts if they are causing problems, and to address them directly. When I encounter a student with a self-concept issue of “I’m not technical, and this assignment is technical, therefore I won’t try it.” I break down a web-development assignment into smaller pieces and go through it on an individual or small group level, using a comfortable and familiar metaphor, such as following a recipe to bake cookies or building a house. (The learners themselves often suggest a good metaphor with some intelligent questioning.) One early success in a course often goes a long way toward resolving this difficulty.
The role of learners’ experience
Children generally have fewer unique experiences to draw knowledge from, partly because they have had less time to accumulate it and partly because children in public school have a similar experiential background. Adults often have rich layers of experience that are very different from one another and that provide excellent, relevant and compelling learning material, if it can be tapped for a course.
I recently attended a process planning workshop hosted by IBM. There were six attendees, all of whom were from related departments at Wells Fargo. In a needs assessment, the instructor hit on an issue that we were having. She scrapped the generic example used in the course materials and used our “case study” instead. She incorporated our example throughout the course as an example. My classmates and I were very motivated by the opportunity to solve a real world problem during the course. The course became much more powerful for us because it was immediately relevant.
Readiness to learn
The curriculum for children is often designed so that courses follow the predicted developmental stage of the child, courses build on each other in sequence. With adults, the instructor cannot make such assumptions. Material taught before the student is ready to begin using it will not be as effective as material that can be used right away. As an example, I was part of a team that delivered software training to a group of people. The training was successful, and got excellent reviews. However, the software that was supposed to be delivered and used at the conclusion of the training was delayed by two months. We were asked to design and deliver a refresher course (at a considerable cost to the company) because the students were not comfortable using the software because of the delay between matriculation and availability.
Readiness to Learn also addresses the potential of learning disabilities and other disabilities. Many adults have disabilities that were not diagnosed when they were children, so this possibility (and eventuality) must be addressed.
Motivation
Children can be motivated to learn nearly any topic by an enthusiastic and supportive teacher. Adults need more specific motivation. As an example, many adults engage in learning activities with anticipation of a better job. By providing placement services, networking opportunities, and marketable certificates; a learning opportunity can better meet that expectation and hence, more effectively motivate students to complete and excel at the program.
It is important for an instructor to understand the concepts of androgogy when teaching adults. In many key factors, there is a significant difference between adult and child learners. By designing courses with the needs and characteristics of adults in mind, an instructor or educator stands a much better chance of success. When designing educational programs for your company, design your training programs for adults.

Language Learning Key In Higher Education
Learning a new language can be frightening, exciting, fun, and unfortunately sometimes boring. Taking free language lessons makes the boring part of that equation obsolete by using games, flash cards, and word scrambles in order to help you memorize words and learn vocabulary. It’s not that hard to prove that if you’re learning something by having fun, you will assimilate a lot more information (in this case grammar, spelling, vocabulary, etc) than if you would simply learn it “the hard way”.
Having fun while learning is a great way to build your marketability, not only in the career world but also the collegiate world. You will qualify for far more study abroad programs if you can speak the language of the land you will be visiting for a semester or summer term of your educational experience. Taking free language lessons online through many of the great language learning programs available can also help you brush up on your vocabulary and memorize words by having you play educational games and use flashcards. This is better than taking a new course in a language simply to improve your existing skills or walking around with a dictionary handy at all times.
In addition to study abroad programs, language skills are necessary for entrance into many graduate school programs. Some programs, even require fluency in not one, but two foreign languages. The good news is that once you’ve learned one new language, learning another language is easier. If the two languages share a common lexical foundation (such as Slavic, Latin, Anglo-Saxon languages) then it will be even easier to “jump” from one of them to the other. The even better news is that with these free online programs you can learn as many new languages as you would like.
If you are planning to take your LSAT online, free practice tests can be found here as well as. You can also find bilingual legal dictionaries on CD format if you know where to look. This will help those who are learning English as a second language and hope to attend law school as well as those who simply need to learn American laws for the sake of legal work they are doing in other countries.
For the sake of education, learning a foreign language is becoming less of an option and more of a requirement. In addition to learning about other languages and cultures during the course of studying new languages, you also learn a great deal more about your own language and culture as well as how the world views you, often by default. There are very few things you can learn that will have as great of an impact on your life as a new language.
Educational and Learning Toys
www.WatchMojo.com takes a look at Leap Frog toys, one of the best known and trusted names in educational toys. In this video we discover that Leap Frog offers toddler toys and educational games to support early childhood development in learning motor skills, social development, music and creativity.
Integration of e-Adventure games in Virtual Learning Environments using SCORM
In this video we show how you can easily integrate the e-Adventure games in a Virtual Learning Environment such as Moodle. In this manner you can easily distribute and deploy your educational games and game-like simulations, just as any other kind of content. No more complex installation processes! Moreover, using SCORM the e-Adventure games can exchange data with the VLE. This is an amazing feature as you can configure the game to tell the VLE how the student is doing. Then you will not need to plan assessment or debriefing sessions to know if the students are learning! What you will see in this video is how you can export an e-Adventure game following the SCORM specification with the editor, and then deploy it in Moodle. Then you could observe how the game can communicate data with the VLE (a final grade in this example) that is available for the instructor under the monitoring pages that Moodle provides.
5 Tips For Adult Students to Succeed in Distance Learning
Many working adults who plan to complete a degree they have started, but not completed have chosen to continue their education through a distance learning program. But, being the working adults who need to focus in their study at the same time will need skills and techniques to help them achieve the success. If you are earning a certification or degree through a distance learning program, the 5 tips below can be your success references:
Tip #1: Develop a time management strategy
Most adult students are working individuals who have family obligations and other responsibilities to be full-filled. Allocating time for each task can be a challenge for them. Fortunately, distance learning programs give the most flexibilities for adult students to fit their study into a schedule that does not crash with other tasks. You need to create a schedule upfront that dedicates specific times to make progress for your distance learning program without affecting other responsibilities, and you have to stick to this schedule.
Tip #2: Make the most from online discussions
Since online discussions are the main form of communication for distance learning. You have to maximize the use of these threaded discussions for your own benefit. Try to enjoy the interaction with other students through online discussion because it helps to develop the relationships with online classmates. You will learn more from sharing and interaction with other online students by participating actively in the online discussion. In fact, the survey results found from successfully distance learners showed students will be able to retain knowledge or what they have learned in classes by applying the knowledge to their work or in threaded discussions. Therefore, if you want to be a success distance learner, be sure to make the most out from online discussions.
Tip #3: Make asking questions useful in learning
Learn through asking questions have been proven statistical work in learning. Students who ask the right questions and get the answers tend to retain the knowledge they have learned in the online classroom. Successful adult learners will make their efforts to research and craft questions to engage among the peers and instructors. Therefore, you should try to make asking question useful in learning.
Tip #4: Stay motivated
One of the key factors that drive an adult student to complete his/her distance learning program is to stay motivated. You need to stay motivated, through the desire to complete the distance learning program successfully and to earn the degree or certificate for a better career future. One way to keep your motivated is to team up with a few of your online classmates and motivate each other to finish assignments and complete projects on time.
Tip #5: Make connection with fellow students
Although your purpose of enrolling into a distance learning program is to get graduated and earn a degree or certificate, the value of interacting with other students should also be stressed. Making connection with fellow students and stay connected through threaded discussions will help you to progress through your learning smoothly.
Summary
Working adults who go back to study through distance learning need to equip themselves with the necessary skills and techniques if they want to complete their study program successfully. Use the above 5 tips as your references to become a success adult student to earn a degree or certification through a distance learning program.
